Epidaurus:
- Continue towards Epidaurus, with a brief stop at the ancient port of Kechries, where Saint Paul disembarked on his return to Ephesus in 52 AD.
- In antiquity, Epidaurus was known as a center of healing, where the god of medicine, Asclepius, was born and worshipped.
- Visit the Theatre of Epidaurus, renowned for its incredible acoustics and symmetrical beauty, still used today during the “Athens Festival.”
Mycenae:
- Proceed to Mycenae, one of the most important historical monuments of Greek civilization.
- Explore the ruins of the ancient city, including the Lion’s Gate, the royal tombs, the religious center, and the Palace at the top of the acropolis, where Agamemnon was murdered by his wife, Clytemnestra.
- Finally, see the Treasury of Atreus, the largest and best-preserved of the surviving tholos tombs.
- Excavations began in 1841, but it was 33 years later that the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann unearthed graves, palace remnants, gold jewelry, and other findings, proving that Homer’s writings were based on real events and not just myths.
