Arrival at Olympia:
- Our destination is Olympia, the sacred sanctuary dedicated to Zeus and the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Nestled in a lush, green valley of the western Peloponnese, at the meeting point of the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers, Olympia is a place of remarkable natural beauty. In ancient times, the valley was densely forested and filled with wild olive trees, from which the wreaths for Olympic champions were made. The site was known as Altis, meaning “grove,” and also as Olympia, named after Mount Olympus, the home of Zeus.
Exploring the Archaeological Site:
- Olympia is one of the largest archaeological sites in Greece, rich in historical monuments and works of art, including the renowned statues of Hermes by Praxiteles and Nike by Paeonius. Over the centuries, the sanctuary evolved, with each era contributing its own structures, gradually shaping the complex layout of the site. The sacred precinct of Zeus, known as the Altis, housed temples, votive offerings, and buildings related to religious activities. Surrounding the Altis were the athletic facilities, administrative buildings, guest accommodations, and baths for athletes and visitors.
Lunch and Return:
- After thoroughly exploring the archaeological site, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a traditional local restaurant. With a day full of memorable sights and experiences, we will then make our way back to Athens, ensuring your safe return to your hotel.
